The megacity Rises to Toxic Smog After Celebrations

On Tuesday morning citizens of the world's most polluted city found themselves inhaling severely hazardous air that fell into the "alarming" range.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of the city registered an pollution measurement over 500, which equals ten times the recommended threshold established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of toxic particulate matter soared to of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than acceptable levels.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that covers the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

However in recent months, the newly elected local administration petitioned the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been criticized by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and environment".

Court Verdict and Implementation

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, the court agreed to the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated periods throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was extensive violation of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Many monitoring devices throughout Delhi registered contamination spiking around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels recorded during the festival in at least three years.

Cross-Border Effects

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also triggered a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Issue

Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in the city have remained as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around the festival period, the levels of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been found to spike to seventy percent above the peak levels ever documented in Beijing, which was previously considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Factors

This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in adjacent areas of farming communities.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Health and Financial Consequences

Public health and economic consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple research.

These hazardous conditions results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is calculated to be causing ten thousand untimely deaths each year in the city.
